A.P.P.L.E’s Kitchen Hub

Completed Project

A.P.P.L.E have been at the ARTBLOCK for 20 years. We have cooked and eaten together from the very start. It has always been important- good home cooked food, fresh ingredients, hospitality and now ensuring everyone has enough to eat.

Our tiny kitchen has served us well but we need more space and better equipment. A.P.P.L.E. are kicking off a big refurbishment project which will turn our storeroom into a beautiful new shiny kitchen. The first stage is clearing our store cupboard and putting up a new shed to house all our sports equipment. The second stage is to put in new windows and a door into the proposed kitchen area. The third stage is to refit the space out with the equipment the project will fund and create the new kitchen with more space to cook, learn and create.

What we’ll deliver:

  • Clear the area and construct a new shed for all our sports equipment.
  • Prepare the now empty room in the ARTBLOCK for the kitchen.
  • Install a new kitchen.

Why it’s a great idea:

A.P.P.L.E is a charity working with children and young people. We provide a wide variety of activities in out-of-school time including, Sport and Outdoor play, Art and Creative projects, Youth club, and more. We also provide our comprehensive food project. This addresses all aspects – food insecurity and school holiday meals, healthy eating for children and young people (reducing sugar, reducing meat, eating more veg), learning to cook (shopping./ time management/ budgeting) eating together and hospitality skills.

All this in a tiny kitchen. It’s time to make a big change. We will be able to provide more home cooked meals using fruit and vegetable from our gardens and food from our partner providers City Harvest. The benefits will be that more children and young people will be able to learn how to cook, a valuable life skill, and enjoy providing meals for their peers.

Steps to get it done:

  • Clearing the area for the shed and laying a concrete floor
  • Purchasing the storage shed
  • Putting up the shed
  • constructing the new kitchen

A.P.P.L.E create a safe, creative place for children, young people to meet friends, to take part in activities that enhance their wellbeing, to develop life and work skills, and that provides comfort and support in times of difficulty.
