Fathers Reading Every Day

Completed Project

Project Date(s): March 2016 to July 2016

FRED (Fathers Reading Every Day) is a well-evaluated supported reading programme now running in primary schools and early years settings across the country.

FRED has been shown to improve children’s reading accuracy, comprehension and rate of reading; their writing; and their behaviour. It can also improve attainment in math’s – and acts as a great ‘way in’ to establishing wider engagement with fathers. FRED is a four–six weeks programme expected to instill new reading habits that can last throughout the child’s primary school life and beyond. Our programme will be rolling out and a celebration event will take place at the end. At the end of 6 months, we will invite all of the participants to come together to have a celebration where they can invite family to attend. Our aim of running this project is to increase and sustain engagement of fathers/male carers throughout the whole community.

FRED is introduced to improve children’s reading accuracy, comprehension and rate of reading; their writing; and their behaviour. It can also improve attainment in math’s – and acts as a great ‘way in’ to establishing wider engagement with fathers/male carers.

Although FRED is a four-six weeks programme we expect it to instill new reading habits that can last throughout the child’s primary school life and beyond. This is a chance for fathers/male carers/figures to bond with their children and extend their learning and development.

This programme will be running in the summer months and will be based at the following locations:

  • John Perryn Children’s Centre, Long Drive, Acton, London W3 7PD
  • Maples Children’s Centre, East Churchfield Road, Acton, W3 7LL
  • Acton Park Children’s Centre, East Acton Lane, London W3 7LJ.
