How to look after your local heritage

Local heritage plays an essential role. It often gives the community its own unique identity and distinctiveness. The borough of Ealing is full of history, and has many sites that are on the local heritage list.

The role of local heritage listing

Local heritage lists play an important role in celebrating and protecting local history at a local level. With the help of residents we can help identify heritage sites that we would like to see protected. If changes affecting the historic environment are proposed, locally listed heritage sites can help influence planning decisions in a way that conserves and enhances the listed sites character. The process of preparing a local heritage list provides an opportunity for local authorities and residents to work in partnership to protect the local historic environment.

Heritage at risk

Ealing has many listed buildings in the borough such as the Stable Block at Brent Lodge Park, Hanwell community centre, Southall Manor house and St Bernard’s Hospital.  Unfortunately, these sites are categorised as ‘Heritage at risk’, often because of the deterioration of the buildings structure.

However there is good news! The buildings are listed, which means these buildings in the borough are in the process of being repaired.

What can you do?

This is where you come in, we need your help to identify more buildings/sites in the area that you believe should be protected and listed. Whether it be because the site has a rich history or you know a building that has a distinctive or interesting exterior, we want your suggestions.

If you have a site in mind you would like to nominate to be listed, please visit the Historic England website.
