The Making of a Community………

Fun, fun, fun at Golflinks Estate, Southall

This time last year the Golflinks Estate in Southall did not even have a residents association!

After a brief meeting in the community centre back in May of this year the newly appointed members of the Association met with Community Champions Co-ordinator and strategic housing officer to plan the first joint Fun Day with Emmanuel Church.  We only had 6 weeks to plan the event.

Free popcorn, candyfloss and ice cream all put a big smile on the faces of the children, as did the comedian who joined them for three enthralling rounds of fabulous fun and silliness.  Bouncy castle, balloon shaping, face painting also kept the children occupied; as did the fire engine which the children were able to climb all over.

There was food from around the world for the adults, which was absolutely delicious.  All of the adults were serenaded by the sounds laid down by the DJ for the day and there was much laughter and dancing to be had by all.   There were a number of pampering and henna sessions for the tired Mums as well.

Very popular on the day was the ‘pop up make your own window box with flowers shop’ which appeared in the nursery garden of the community centre.  More than 50 beautiful window boxes were given away to children and parents alike; all of whom were able to ‘plant their own’ on the day with the support of our contractors, Amey and the Community Champions Co-ordinator.

Residents returned home with a smile on their face and the lucky ones with some balloons, candyfloss or a window box in their hands.

Angie Agu chair of the Golflinks Estate residents association said “It is amazing what can happen when people who care about where they live decide to get together and have some fun.  I recommend anyone to start a residents association, it makes a real difference to the local community”.
